MOZAMBIQUE  Hunt # 157

Butch hunted here with 4 of our good
clients in October of 2009. The hunt
was primarily for cape buffalo, but also
included plains game such as sable,
nyala, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Chobe
Bushbuck, Reedbuck, red and blue
duiker and suni. One client also took a
monster hippo. Butch noted:  “ I was
absolutely surprised at just how much
fun and enjoyment was to be found on
the hippo hunt. It was a wonderful
experience to boat the giant Zambezi
River and see hippos, crocs and lots of
very alert natives carefully watching
the water as they bathed!” An earlier
Safari client   had taken a croc had a
bracelet and some human bones and
some clothing in it! This place is the
real Africa in all it’s primitive glory!

PLAINS GAME
An earlier client of ours had also taken
a huge croc (see pictures) along with
buff and plains game. Another client
took buff, a huge Nyala and more. On
Butch’s inspection hunt, the one thing
that impressed him the most about the
two giant concessions being hunted
(over 2.5 million acres of truly wild
country)—was the great abundance
and variety of plains game! You almost
constantly same game! Obviously the
vigorous anti-poaching patrols hired
and paid for by the Safari Company
have done a wonderful job here over
the last few years. This place offers
wonderful  plains game hunting, with a
huge variety of species and an
excellent abundance of them to boot.
Do not exclude Mozambique from your
thoughts on plains game- if you do you
will be missing the boat! Add on top
notch buffalo hunting and you have a
great safari destination.

A typical day in the field during Butch’s
hunt might show this by way of variety:
Cape Buffalo; 20 to 60 Sable; 20 to 50
Lichtenstein Hartebeest; 10 to 20
Nyala; some waterbuck; 50 to a
hundred reedbuck; dozens of red and
blue duikers, several suni, a dozen or
more warthog, maybe a bushpig, and
an abundance of monkeys, baboons
and birdlife!!

BUFFALO
This is the real East Africa. Remote,
uncivilized, full of wildlife with much of
it unhunted and unexplored so far.
These two huge concessions are in
Eastern Mozambique, and border a
giant reserve for Cape Buffalo- no
hunting allowed in there! That reserve
is about 50 miles square! But because
it borders these concessions, herds of
50 to 100 to 500 head of buffalo are
not uncommon, and much larger herds
are sometimes seen! How good is the
buff hunting?? Butch feels confident,
especially if you hunt the swamps with
ARGO’s, that normally you can expect
to take your buff in one day! Really-
one day, and probably before noon!
Or, for a bigger challenge, chase them
in the forest. Then expect to spend 3
to 5 days normally an be prepared to
do plenty of walking. Butch had the
experience in thw swamps of watching
a herd of 100 buffalo being pushed to
the hunters by 25 elephants!
AWESOME!
                                               CROC
AND HIPPO
For those wanting to do croc or hippo,
you likely will boat on the Great
Zambezi River, probably all the way
down to the Indian Ocean or close to it.
A grand experience! Allow plenty of
time for big crocs- they are smart! We
prefer earlier hunts (June) for croc.

RELATIVE COSTS
Pricing here rivals Zimbabwe, but the
hunting is superior to Zim, in our
opinion. You do have more extra costs
then Zim, but we think you get a much
different experience in Mozambique.

RELATIVE COSTS:
Pricing here rivals Zimbabwe, but the hunting is superior to
Zim, in our opinion. You do have more extra costs then Zim,
but we think you get a much different experience in
Mozambique. Zimbabwe has a large human population while
Moz is much more remote and closer to the true Safari “feel”.
Add to that the marvelous game concentrations including
huge herds of buffalo and glorious amounts of plains game,
the prototypical tented camp of East Africa, the remoteness
and the true African experience, and it all makes Mozambique
a must do!! Butch called it his best safari ever!
