SOUTH AFRICA #94
NORTH CAPE

As most of our regular clients know, we are constantly and
continually looking for new opportunities all over the world.
Also, because we have over 17,000 serious hunting clients
and work with nearly 300 outfitters world-wide – we get
contacted by lots of folks who want us to represent them.
Years ago we represented an alliance of various African
landowners in South Africa, but they eventually broke up. This
operation was part of that alliance. So naturally this operation
contacted us to represent them. This operation also has
recently merged with a very large and very well known Safari
company and together they can offer just about every specie
known to exist in huntable numbers in South Africa! And they
also do it well.

They have two main camps, and also a variety of concessions
to hunt. Their property close to Kimberley is 20,000 acres;
plus they hunt many other concessions in the area. Their
property close to Schweizer Reinecke is 16,000 acres, and
other areas to hunt also exist- all chosen based on desired
species.

The weather in the Northern Cape and North West regions are
typical of any semi-desert area with fluctuating temperatures
and varying topographies. Their areas boast a diverse type of
terrain, with hilly and rocky outcrops that are peppered with
Acacia thorn trees and a savannah type woodland that
stretches out into the vast open plains, offering our clients
the very best of hunting. These areas are especially suited
for Buffalo, Rhino, Kudu, Sable, Roan, Lechwe, Gemsbuck,
Nyala, Eland, Waterbuck, Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala, Warthog,
Springbok ….. Just to mention a few of the 40 odd different,
species they hunt.

Camps are very comfortable, permanent thatched roofed
lodges with all the modern amenities to ensure your comfort
and safety. The staffs at each camp are very well trained and
cater to your needs. A  well stocked refreshment counter
supplies Beer, Wine, Liquor, Cold Drinks, Mineral Waters and
stacks of ice.  Camps have hot and cold running water, flush
toilets, ceiling fans and air conditioners. Laundry is done on a
daily basis and rooms are cleaned every day by friendly staff.

TRANSPORT:  All our clients fly Kimberley. It is worth the little
bit of extra money to fly to Kimberley, as it is a tedious  drive
from Jo'burg after that long flight from the States! An average
plane ticket from Jo'burg to Kimberley will cost +\- $250 round
trip p.p. We can arrange a drive too.

SOUTH AFRICA # 212
LION, RHINO, PLAINS GAME

We have for the last 10 years, watched as the then by 15%,
and now prices are often double We have for the last 10
years, watched as the and more what they were a short 10 or
12 prices for Big Five animals jumped by 10%; years ago. It is
supply and demand- demand far outstrips the very limited
supply, especially for lion and rhino. It is a bit better with buff,
where the price has only doubled!! But lion and rhino- has
gone ballistic.  A good male lion hunt has blown up into the
$30,000 to almost $50,000 range in some places! Rhino is even
worse with free range rhino into the high $80,000 range and
even more for giants!  As hunters ourselves, we gave up all
hope of ever taking the Big Five. It is not just the money, it is
justifying the cost versus the enjoyment - and we could not
make it. Lots of soul searching, for myself at least, I
concluded I would consider a high fence hunt for Rhino or
lion, as it was that or nothing!  Then along came a spate of
video from the internet showing hunters being charged,
knocked down and mauled on those fenced cat hunts. Pretty
awesome stuff! Then a close personal hunting friend, and one
of the finest PH’s I know, got into a discussion with me about
fenced lion hunts. He confessed to me that far more than
cape buffalo or the rest of the free ranging Big Five, the
fenced lion were what he actually dreaded. Because they
have very little or no natural fear of man, they are very likely
to come for you, in his experience. He said, they are the only
animal that made his palms sweat! After that, for me at least, I
felt relatively comfortable with such a hunt.

In our efforts to find some way to bring down the cost, we
finally found this operation and PH. All hunts are spot and
stalk, both Rhino and Lion. No baited hunts. IF YOU HUNT
BOTH, YOU GET A REAL BARGAIN! He hunts the lion/rhino on a
3000 acre enclosure, being roughly a 4.5 square mile area.
That is large enough to make it a bit of a search, and with the
brushy and heavy cover - the element of true danger is
certainly there. To add a bunch of spice to the lion hunts, he
has about 25 to 27 Rhino’s running around in there as well.
When asked if anyone had ever voiced a complaint about the
experiences there, the PH replied:

“We have hunted many lions on this concession, and I have
never had a complaint from any hunter. We always hunt on foot
and I think most hunters have been too scared, with the lions
and all the rhinos around, to complain! Heavy cover adds
excitement!”

Another client said this:

“This PH is a wonderful fellow who does everything for his
clients. He is as good as anyone I have ever hunted with in
Africa, and is better than many! Good food, good lodging, great
staff, great hunt- both my wife and I took lion charges! No
worries here! He is superb in all respects.”

The price of the lioness hunt is an incredible one. You have
basically
two choices as to what price level you want to pay.
The least expensive hunt is $4500 for a lioness. IF you do that
package it
includes two full days hunting; the trophy fee and
the daily rate; lodging and meals.
You get the complete hide
suitable for a full mount—BUT you do not get the skull or the
claws (they sell those to help reduce your hunt price.) Of
course the lioness skull is not used in the mount anyway, as a
false mouth, teeth and tongue are used. My own taxidermist
says claws will not be an issue—but talk to your taxidermist is
my advice.
If you want the skull and the hide with claws, then
choose the $5500 package.
That package includes THREE
days hunting instead of two, and you get the complete hide,
claws and skull.
You can also combine a plains game hunt
with his lion or darted Rhino hunts if you wish.

The darted rhino hunt is $4500- IF DONE in conjunction with
the lioness.
No portion of the live animal is kept, so we
strongly encourage you to bring someone along to videotape
and take pictures. They will pose the rhino for pix.
If you wish
to hunt ONLY the rhino, and not the lioness too, the rhino
price is then $5700, again a real bargain as most are selling
for $7500 and up!!!

For a very nominal $1500, they can get you a replica mount
(fiberglass); which the outfitter tells us is one of the best
Rhino mounts around. WE have not seen the mounts, but it
certainly sounds like a great bargain. The picture above is
what to expect, approximately.

OTHER INFO:
  • Extra hunt days are $300/day;
  • Observer fee is $150/day.
  • Airport pickup is available and recommended. Price is
approximately $100 per person each way, subject to
change for gas prices and availability.
  • Camp consists of the usual COMFORTABLE brick chalets
    with showers and electricity
  • Outfitter supplies the shipping documents including the
    CITES export documents.
  • You pay for dipping, packing and shipping to US.
  • You use your own customs broker for importing and for
obtaining a US CITES import permit. We can assist you
with suggestions for a good broker.

MALE LION HUNTS:  $18,000 and up.
The hunts for male lions can be arranged at rates from about
$18,000 for a young maned male, to $20K to $30,000 for a
mature full maned male - and a bit more for a black maned
male. If you have interest in one of these, just contact us and
we can discuss the options and costs. Pictures and
references available. He has some gorgeous cats!
You are
paying about half of a free range hunt price!

Hi Butch! This PH and his father Kobus and the apprentice PH
Aube are a first class act in all ways. I hunted Lion in
Botswana unsuccessfully for 18 days before I hunted with
him. In just a few days with him I took 9 trophies including my
lion. He is an excellent judge of game as well. He was off by
only .5 of an inch on two of the horned trophies. You cannot
go wrong with sending your clients to him. Please feel free to
use me as a reference.

SOUTH AFRICA # 208
LIMPOPO REGION

Butch and Joan had the pleasure of hosting this fine Outfitter
and PH at their home in Cheyenne for part of a week in winter
2008. Butch and he even went bird shooting together. And he
and Butch put on a seminar on African hunting at the Holiday
Inn in downtown Cheyenne. By the end of this fine individuals
visit, all of us here felt sad to say good-bye!

The Lodge is situated about 25 miles from Thabazimbi, and is
in a Malaria Free area, a two and a half hour drive North-West
from Oliver Thambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
T
hey include airport pickup and return at no charge!! Another
substantial saving over charter flights!! The lodge offers you
the opportunity to enjoy the timeless tranquility of the
Limpopo Bushveld.

The Thabazimbi bushveld is situated in the Limpopo Province
and forms part of the world-renowned Waterberg Biosphere.
If non hunters (or hunters) want to play, the well known
Sun City is only a 1.5 hour drive from the Lodge. Likewise a
superb game facility known as Pilansberg National Park is
next to Sun City, where you can also view the big 5. So you
have non-hunting options as well as hunting options here.
And the Limpopo is a truly wonderful and very rich game area.

The Lodge offers upscale chalets of 2 and 3 bedrooms, en-
suite. Enjoy the comforts of your private lounge while a five
star meal is being prepared for you. The chalets are hidden
amongst the bush to ensure privacy. Relax in the sun, beside
the crystal clear swimming pool, while enjoying the from their
fully equipped bar. A typical day starts with early morning tea,
coffee, rusks (biscuits), muffins, toast etc. Then a larger full
brunch/lunch will be served before the afternoon hunt.
Supper consists of a full 3 to 4 course meal. Food is prepared
in a typically South African manner, and you will enjoy the
wonderful wild game and other food. All drinks are included in
moderation. Cooler boxes with soft drinks are prepared with
each hunt. Before the safari your own particular food and
beverage preferences will be noted. Any allergies will be
noted and catered for.

RIFLE OR BOW!!
Rifle or bow, this outfitter caters to both and knows the
difference! Bow hunters can do spot and  stalk or hunt from
blinds. Blinds can be dug into the ground; they may be tent
type blinds or even tree stands. Bow shots typically are from
15 to 35 yards. Rifle hunters do spot and stalk and can expect
shots out to as far as 300 yards, although normally they are
much closer than that. They have typical safari vehicles for
transport. You are hunting on a total concession area of
100,000 acres. Game consists of nearly 40 species from
Leopard and buffalo to eland, kudu, gemsbuck, sable and
much more. Virtually every specie noted as being present in
South Africa is here, except for Elephant, rhino and hippo.  All
PH’s are fully licensed and are very experienced and are
schooled in pleasing client needs. The Limpopo itself is a
famed game area with great biodiversity and habitat. And very
importantly--these are nice people too- they enjoy fun and
happy times, but understand how to get serious when hunting
as well!
